Wild Life Adventures: March of Crabs (1997) VHS NEW RARE Hard to Find
Roll out the red carpet! Each year, 80 million red crabs migrate
from the mountains to the sea and back on Christmas Island, just south
of Indonesia. Australian filmmaker Ben Cropp took his teenage sons to
document the adventure and the surrounding wildlife and came back with
March of the Crabs, a fascinating and lighthearted look at the
startling annual journey. Quite a number of red crabs miss their
destination, the victims of cars, storm drains, or the dreaded blue
crabs, but out of 80 million, enough make it to mate and lay eggs in
the sea to ensure another generation. The footage of living carpets of
crabs scuttling across roads and everything else (they're found in
bedrooms, on tennis courts, practically anywhere reachable from the
ground) is creepy and unsettling but still absorbing--rarely do we see
the march of life captured so graphically. Additional shots of undersea
life including gorgeous corals, dolphins, and even a whale shark make
March of the Crabs a riveting nature travelogue. --Rob Lightner
